All right, let’s get started. I’m going totalk a little bit about monetizationand I’m going to talk about things Idon’t feel like it’s being talkedenough. I’m going to try to talk overthis louder crowd up there a little bit, too. All right, but first, I’m going totell you a little bit about me. Allright, just take a second. I only have Ionly got 15 minutes, but I’ll take acouple of seconds to talk a little bitabout me. I wanted to be anentrepreneur. I sold cassette tapes whenI was in elementary school. Didn’t knowwhat that journey would look like.Started making apps in 2010. Prettyearly, right? In 2013, I decided to start apodcast on apps to see if I could turnthis little side business into afull-time business to fulfill thatelementary school dream of becoming anentrepreneur. And so, I interviewed someof the greatest
people in the app space, the co-founderShazam, the creator of Crossy Road, talked to some amazing people, built upan audience who then started coming tome for marketing help. I ran growth fora startup in San Francisco. I was like,“Okay, let me see if I can apply some ofthe strategies that worked online intothe mobile space.” And so, you know, long story short, 13 years later,we’ve got a company where we do ASO,ASA, and monetization, one of myfavorite topics. I’m hoping to leave youwith something that you can literallyimplement tonight that will grow yourrevenues. All right. And if you want togive a little sub love to YouTube, wegot over 70,000 subs on YouTube, sothere’s a QR code. I see a lot of phonesnot coming up. Thank you, Bobby. Thankyou. All right, let’s get started.
This is for just the newbies in the appspace. I don’t think there’s many of youhere, but definitely have your paywallon the onboarding. I know what you’rethinking, "Wait, before they even use myApp? "I say, "Yeah."Because over 60 to 80% of all the people that end upbuying, they do so during the onboardingprocess. All right. Second best place isyour homepage, quote unquote main pageof your app.
Everybody good? Everybody should knowthat. I’m going to get that out of theway. All right, here’s one that I reallylove.
You can see I’m really good at namingstuff. Three screen paywalls are verydirect. You probably know what I’m goingto be talking about. So, here it is. I first discovered thison an app called Resumes. They’re goingto be featured a lot here, ladies andgentlemen. But, they’ve got onboardingscreens, and towards the end of thatonboarding, they have a video. Coolvideo. Then, they have this screen. Weoffer 7 days for free. We’ll remind youin 2 days. It’s sort of a play on thatBlinkist. You guys are familiar withthat?
I think they ask for push notifications, and then you get hit the paywall. Thatled these two screens, if I can go backreal quick, those two screensled to a 56% increase in trialactivations, and for some clients, we’reseeing triple digits increase. So,that’s double, all right? Double intrial activations, double in trial topaid, double in LTV.
Next. This is what I love, and I thinkthis is going to be the future ofmonetization, especially if you gotsubscription app. Again, great naming.Paid intro offers. So,Resumes again,7 days for free on a yearly. We see that199 199 per month. What the hell is thatstretching for a monthly plan?It renews at the yearly.I love this type of marketing becauseit’s like online marketing. It remindsme of tripwire campaigns. Hey, buy myPDF workshop, Bobby’s.10-step guide to being a betterPresenter PDF workshop for 10 bucks.
He’s going to upsell the crap out of you later on as you check out.Same type of philosophy. I love it. Here’s somebody in our app founders community. He ran the same exact test. He saw his conversion rates go up from 19 to 25%.And his proceeds went up from 21%. All right? That’s money in the bank right there.
All right, this is another cool strategy. It’s called reverse trials. So, we got this app. Let me—I love me a laser. Let me see if I can get the laser going.Okay, maybe not. So, if you activate a trial, you see the welcome to pro up top.If you don’t, because most people won’t, you see, "Hey, don’t worry. Enjoy a pro week on us."And then it’s the same what I could like to call secondary onboarding or trying to get users to engage with your app.
So, the app originally has onboarding screens, butThen, after the paywall, he gets you tohe says, "Hey, enjoy a pro week on us."Okay?
But, here’s the kicker. Now, this app isan app for bus times and train times. So, what I really love about this, shoutout to Danville, anybody from Danville? All right, is the pro features. So, he’s trying to get you toget those pro features and enable them.Because, guess what? It’s 7 days, and guesswhat? I’m going to remind you when it’sall gone. All right? So, he did that. It’s push notification. You can hit himwith a discount. You can hit him withanother offer, but that’s led to thiskicker. It’s like 10x conversions. So, before this, he’s only converting0.4. That’s less than 1%, andafterwards, he’s converting 4.5.And on average, it’s 2%. So, that’spretty impressive in my eyes.
All right, next is hard paywall onselect traffic. So, I started thinking,I have a podcast. I interview a lot ofPeople who’ve done very well in the appspace. And I was like, there’s a commontheme coming up.
Facebook, AppsFlyer, hard paywall. Start thinking, hmm. Some of the downsides of a hard paywallare negative reviews.I start thinking, what if you only showthis hard paywall on certain people? So,this is a normalscreen. You know, you can see where didyou hear about us? Where you’re askingthem. So, and then obviously they fill outand then you get the paywall, right?I’ve missed a lot of screens. I only got15 minutes, all right? So, what if youselect search on App Store?Hell, show them the X. It’s a softpaywall. All right, you don’t got to buy. You canget out if you want. But what if theypick Instagram or Facebook?Take it out. It’s that easy, right? YouGet to probably pretty much code thispretty easily. So, I had thishypothesis.
Needed somebody to actually execute onthis, and somebody did. I saw this sharedon LinkedIn, so I’m going to steal this. But he’s seen tremendous results just bydoing that. You don’t gotta do it foreverybody. Just do it for maybe some ofthat paid traffic cuz you’re going toget those signals faster if you do ahard paywall. Trial activationsguaranteed will go up, but you gottapay attention to your trial to paid.Man, I’m making good time, ladies andgentlemen. Thank you, Bobby. I’m makinggood time. All right. I came in thinkingI only had 10. Yo, you hit me withanother five? I’m all good. All right, discount. I love discounting. I’m goingto slow it down for the discounts. Theaverage app loses about 77% of its actdaily active users within 3 days. Three.4% is AppsFlyer metric.Day 30 retention. Yo, in my opinion,People who pay pay attention.
Okay? Get more people to pay, your retention will go up, guaranteed. Ihad a client 1 million monthly activeusers. No paywall on the onboarding. Decided tofinally add it. Guess what happened?Probably more revenues and increase inretention. That is it, my friend.
So, look, if you’re going to do discounting,I love discounting, all right? Cuz youmost people will say no. This is the waythat I like to do it.It’s you let them pick. So, don’t justshow them my 50% offer. Let them slideinto that 50% offer, and that is thewinner right there. Right? Same offer, just letting you select the lower price.
Surprisingly, when my client firstlaunched this, we saw an even revenuesplit between the two, the middleand the end. Now, everybody selects theend. Everybody picks the lowest price. That’s it, ladies and gentlemen.
I still have 6 minutes. I timed myself.
For 9 minutes, and I did that.Do you have any questions? Now, okay, raise your phone, take a picture, grabthat QR code, hit that sub, like somevideos, and connect with me any whichway you want. Any questions while we got6 minutes and 30 seconds. Thank you,Bobby. It’s like I planted you, butokay, great question.
So, if you already got a great trial activation, okay? Like above 10%, I would do thepaid intro offers. All right? And that’sjust getting people, cause most peoplewill not take that 1.99 a month, that’s when you’re going to get about60, 70% trial to paid.
So, this technically is their paid to paid, butyou know what I mean.Thank you.All right, that’s it.
