to really break down these success stories happening in the app space and how can you how you can leverage all these strategies that we’re sharing to help you grow your downloads and today we’re going to talk all about Reddit marketing I can add a little bit flavor into the ads section of the talk but we’re gonna talk about how do you leverage Reddit to build a community and then also help promote your app here to break it all down is an indie developer who’s seen success on Reddit he’s going to break down those strategies so let’s
bring in elay [Music] foreign Neely welcome to the show hi Steve thanks for having me yeah I wanna I wanna we got some slides ready for you guys and we gotta we want to show off melee’s app and this is the app we’ll be talking about as Neely breaks down his
entire Reddit strategy and how he’s been using it to promote his app for absolutely free anyway you know I love this topic and I just want to say this up the top because I think a lot of people I meet in person anyway I say Steve you only work with small apps too and I’m like no I work with really big apps too but I like talking about how do you go from zero to one thousand zero to five thousand without spending money because that is where my creative juices go so for those people out there we work with the biggest apps in the world and
we work the tiniest but I love these type of strategies anyway so I’m pumped up yeah actually the initial attraction was is the most important thing like you can spend as much money as possible and still not get enough traffic um but and there are certain ways through which we can um get downloads without in even investing money yeah I love it man all right well let’s let’s go into this presentation here for sure well actually let’s say some other different people what’s up George good to see you juaruna
is here good to see you my friend cost of and seeing you what’s up Costa and then Muhammad is here as well so say hi in the comments man come on hi guys all right anyway let’s break it all down for the audience here all right cool so here’s your app where do you want to start I’m gonna go with the next slide yeah so the first thing what I did was like um give away so when we initially
released the app um so the audience doesn’t know about our app so what I did was like uh I started giving away for the lifetime subscription of my app in different subredded so oh and I made a list of all the blog posts that those who do the giveaway of promo code also so from that way I have a list when I publish the app
so uh and there was one um meditation Society so my app is a meditation motivation app so I got in touch with the heart fullness Society community so in my city they have a bigger audience of uh meditation that those who practice meditation so got in touch with them and shared my app with them and the third strategies you I used was promoting my app in subredded so there are different ways through which we can promote our
app in subreddit like creating our own subreddit then there are specific subreddit through which we can do giveaway and there are also subredded for developers through which we can do giveaway but on those upgraded they only allow for developers to do the deal of it hold on let’s let’s break down the giveaway so it’s a lifetime offer we actually did that for one of our new apps nearly 2 where we’ve seen pretty good success which
which subreddits are you promoting this giveaway in so there many subjects for my audience target audience there was one um help depression then app hookup then Google Play deals these are the top three uh subreddit that was like best for doing giveaway got it I love it so with app hookup yeah me let me kind of break it down because we’ve we’ve done some things on app hookup too and it’s one of the best subreddits so I’ll try to put all these
into the show notes as well but you mentioned one app hookup I love this so was it easy to do the lifetime giveaway on app hookup because we try to do a remove ads and it got removed how do you go about going on app hookup so first thing first is to contact the moderator as the applicant moderator team is really great so I got in touch with them and I discussed with them that whether I can do um a promotion or not so they
strict and they are strict about not doing any promo code giveaway so only thing was um possible was do making the lifestyle subscription free like for in iOS there is a lifetime subscription you can put the zero pricing on them so how many yeah quite sorry yeah so for that I did um zero pricing for the app iOS version of my app and within two days I got like 1000 plus downloads nice
do you have a favorite moderator here any one of these moderators will do yeah okay cool I like it did you try no I know we’re focused on Reddit but I want to stay on this lifetime offer as well but did you try going on app advice too and running the Lifetime off-ro on app advice no I didn’t write that one yeah so like here’s what we did with and I love this lifetime offer anyway and I will pull up app advice
right here so what we did for one of our apps we did we did the same lifetime offer away for free now nearly I I I’m not gonna share my visuals because but we have our yearly our paywalls long but we have our yearly and it’s all vertical we have yearly monthly and then lifetime okay of the fold you see the yearly we made the lifetime offer for free we got 12 000 downloads I added the reason after the paywall we got 150 new ratings and then we were able to make one
thousand dollars because some people I’m imagining that’s what happened didn’t actually scroll down enough to see that the lifetime offer was free and ended up just purchasing our yearly subscription which came with the seven day seven days but that’s how you really I love this lifetime offer giveaway especially as a new app because you can inject new downloads and then if you’ve been following the channel you can use those you can sort of exchange those downloads for Ratings to help make your Apple have
more social proof yeah and people also give feedback if you are communicating with them in chat yeah and if if you give the feature that they wanted they will be a loyal customer food to you for a lifetime also yeah I’m gonna break that all down these strategies down in a future live stream in a workshop that we’re going to do live all about apps are optimization it is going to be paid so the cool anything else you want to talk about as sorry I
took over but foreign you’re like hey app hookup generic for everybody to find the right subreddit that is signif that is relevant to your type of app yours is motivation so you went under depression and things like that and then promote the app and reach out to the moderator first that seems to be a given role right yeah and for one more thing for Reddit is like you cannot just simply start posting about your app and read it you need to earn Karma also
so one thing best thing I came across was uh go to submit like get motivated or meme memes and um search search it via all time uh top rated and then you can repost those posts so here let’s give an example let’s break that down I love it because Eli already gave me this example obviously we’re trying a lot of stuff on Reddit okay don’t ask me all these why I’m looking at all these all right like like which which Reddit would
you want me to go get motivated get motivated yeah the 20 million subscribers being okay go to top top and then go all time yeah thank you and I posted the same post with the same subtitle and I got around one or two Karma through this post only and were you giving that away in the same subreddit or a different subreddit no
what I did was like I posted in my own creative subrator of my own okay and I did post in that subreddit and through that subreddit I cross posted in this updated so I get a more traffic into my own subreddit all right I love it so you have your own subreddit what’s the motivation behind motivation what’s the motivation behind creating your own subreddit so it creates an audience uh through which I can communicate directly
and I can while communicating I can do giveaway of my app also I see so you have some of these popular posts that you found somewhere else and then you would take this post as this link I’m assuming right no if you go and search share now share there will be an option for cross post yeah so through that if we can cross portion others updated also and then you can pick the right Community yeah love it
love it cool have you seen any benefits to this I mean when I do giveaway of my app uh and all then there is a certain jump in the downloads also love it okay so if you just do a giveaway within your own subreddit yeah cool and the rules are mine in my own Subway so I don’t have to take permissions I love it if you know I love these type of strategies nearly because we did one with similar cross-posting
strategies on Facebook or like Facebook groups how this phishing Indie developer in the fishing space did the same exact strategies and it’s just like very similar here to to Reddit yeah man I love it cool I know you have a few more slides you want to get to uh review sites where else you want to go with this I’m gonna pull up your slides yeah we should go with the giveaway okay yeah
so George has a question too George says to give lifetime access for free you change the price to zero meaning other users who discovered the app will also see the zero value yes George so that is the way to do it you give the lifetime offer away for free see I’m selfish so I’m willing to give our lifetime offer was 150. I was willing to give it away for free because I knew I was gonna get more ratings from the app advice campaign or the Reddit campaign right so make sure you have that ratings prompt
right after that paywall or even during the onboarding so that you can get a spike in ratings too so it’s a win-win company if you commit communicate with the user then they also give some feedback positive feedback or negative feedback that they want to um they want certain feature if they want to pay for that yeah I like it and the advantage of doing this same thing on Reddit is people have comments right on app advice it’s just a promo and then you get the download app advice you’ll probably get more downloads but yeah you
won’t get the feedback you’ll just get in an app store reviews and this is what we got and you don’t want those but on Reddit at least you’ll get it in the comments I’m assuming that’s where the comment the your feedback came in right yeah cool I like it awesome and one more thing I learned from Reddit is like when we post from Android device and add iOS device it is targeting if you post from iOS device it targets most of the iOS audience I see what about web I’ve always just
posted it on the web like this does it matter at all so it matters but it will give you lesser audience of IOS and Android really yeah interesting okay so the things we can view only when we have a subreddit of Our Own George says is there a way to we can give the way free stuff just for people seeing the promo promo you mean
can we give away the just the free lifetime just to the people who see it on Reddit just to see it on people on app advice yeah uh one of my uh one of the um one of those developer I saw that he was doing a giveaway like he made a app version in the app setting page and he was when we click on three times on that app version thing and there is a there will be a pop-up and you can put a promo code specific for that audience
and apple doesn’t allow you do you have a custom promo code so this way we can bypass that tool also yeah so George there is a way it’s you know you can set up a promo code with an app store connect to give that offer that promo code also has a link within App Store connect so I should create a video about this but I personally George come on who cares at this point I’m I don’t know anyway I’ll say it who cares just give it away

let’s get into the heartfulness community side of things too yeah so heartfulness is a meditation Community which focuses more mainly on a hard part while meditating we focus on the heart and while and and that they practice so I got in touch with them and they do give and they it’s a charity Society if charity kind of thing so they only want free stuff
um it’s a NGO so they don’t charge us anything so if you want to give away something it should be free so that’s what I contacted them and they allowed me to induce the way to them in my Society I love it and it says good number okay it’s not no good number of downloads here too yes Rakesh says can we have a coin later it’s too much to
learn make notes okay it’s on YouTube bro and it lives on LinkedIn forever too so it’s all it’s all there like the recording just lives on YouTube YouTube Forever remains here too all right is this the is this a subreddit the heartfulness no it’s a and there is separated also but it’s not they are not much into Reddit currently but it says and Society heartfulness Society where is that a website what is it uh it’s a website also um if you look
for heartfulness and they have a big Community also where is and they are expanding towards us and Europe currently is it commuting on their website that’s what I’m trying to get at it’s like where is this community to keep talking about it’s a community based in India oh and they’re expanding I see is it like a Facebook group or just an in-person group no it’s like uh satguru or um any other
Guru if you have heard about okay awesome all right cool what’s next so unfortunate uh I made a subredded um and one thing I noticed was like if we post on a post about um images and only images the people were not much attracted to the images as compared to Reels so I um I took some reads from Instagram and just started
posting it and it took and got me decent number of member in my subreddit I like it these things yeah love it and when we share these things in gym subreddit or some others upgraded that is related to motivation they get uh they can see they see the good content and they can follow um Us hours update also
this almost feels like AI generated stuff yeah most of these are AI generated and currently these things are popular in Instagram really it’s all like AI nice okay let’s go back to this and then you talked about this cross promoting yeah cool they’re awesome man
let me go through my notes have you figured out like in terms of when to post when is the best time to post newly yeah so um during Friday or Thursday is the best time because in during this period there will be Saturday and Sunday which will be holiday for everyone and more if I mostly target for the Western audience so my post timing is as per their daytime yeah okay hey we got a
question and vinay has Renee I have the same question do you know where we can get are there some AI websites where we can create something like this like this look I’m a big like Spartan Gladiator guy I love this stuff like is there a way we can do similarious website but um most of them are not most of them are paid that’s fine which one do you know of anything off the top of your head no I just copied paste it here yeah okay so
Nile is just finding them on Instagram and then posting it to his subreddit as well yeah love it okay nurix said hey Steve how are you I’m good nurx thanks for asking my friend all right the it’s true out of all the different subreddits you talked about like the heartfulness community to get motivated the app hookup have you found one like if you had to pick just one is there one subreddit that you would focus in on uh
it completely depends on what kind of app we have like I have a app for motivation and meditation but for um all if you want to go for any subject that supports all kind of app it should be applicable for sure yeah I kind of feel that way too so the mistake I made was just not because app lookup we’ve done a few things and every time I post it almost gets deleted all the time but at the same time it’s almost like you gotta talk to the
moderators you got to make good make sure you prep everything and we should not post it regularly like they have a rule for around if we post once and it should be next post should be after two months or three months like that yeah so they are quite strict about these things same with same with apple Vice I like it yeah cool are you doing anything you know on product hunt when you go live they say engage with the community when you’re live on app hookup do you do anything to
just be like okay that first hour I’m gonna pay attention to the post reply to any comments because that helps the algorithm at all what I do is like um I I try to reply as many comments as possible so that other can also see that I’m actively replying for them and I’m not a what like most of the time if you don’t reply and they will be like it’s this spam account do you get any of your friends to reply just post comments too nah okay
that’s where I would go nearly get some of your friends to be like let them know that you’re gonna be on Reddit and tell them okay go go post go be active on there that’s what we do on product hunt yeah I will yeah I like it cool is there anything else creating the app audit post I know they have guidelines to doing it is there anything that you’ve learned what makes a great app hook up post it’s like simple post but for other
subject I came across that um if if you are trying to promote our app we should tell a story behind it like um if you want to promote the app in nofap community we should say that I was depressed and all those things and then we can put it like it hit this kind of app helped me a lot like I saw one of um one app that was for time table and all those things
so what he did was like he said that we all have gone through kobit and all and so I I was so um not able to put a timetable properly so I make this app and here is my aim and he didn’t put any link to that he just said the app name and you can use this promo code and you can use this promo code by going to setting I was wondering if this was a no follow just for SEO yeah I like it yeah you
know like be careful you know to George’s question can we make it specific I would just give it away like George come on stop being so selfish just give it away for free right so don’t worry about the post because some some things just don’t let you do shorten so anytime you’re shortening the URL or giving a specific URL even on app advice it has to just be the link to the app so be careful with that I like it man cool all right we got some questions you want to get into some of the questions here too sure while we’re in this Razzy says regarding app hookup
sub I feel like most of the posters on there are more of app developers is the retention rate also good from Reddit traffic compared to say premium ads it’s a great question yeah yeah actually I got 1000 plus download in the first two days of the app and they are like and till now I have like 500 users retention so like around 50 retention I got from that that’s awesome man great the main thing was I was communicating with them and they saw that um I’m
directly communicating and I was I tried to go to and personal DM also to get their feedback also if someone tries to um say that app is not working properly or something like that it they don’t like it yeah that’s a great idea because people I got something where yeah I got people to just say they they left me once our reviews here like did you have to do self-promotion here is that what
you had to tag it yeah yeah interesting so if you’re a developer and it’s your own app the moderator will most likely go to I’m going to see your account also so it’s I prefer that um you should delete the other posts that you have done for the app yeah otherwise they will simply going to delete or suspend you from app yeah the post is very like it it has to follow a certain format it’s usually platform app name what’s going free and then
anything else you want to add to it like the a short description and then a link to the app and that’s pretty much it and if you try to do any type of like other links it’s just going to get deleted really fast so these guys are very strict like it’s a great platform and we we leverage it too along with app advice but it gives us more more ways to get around stuff I never tried it for Android have you tried it on Android your Android version I tried for Android also but um I saw that the free ones
work way better than the less price version discounted version yeah I agree just give it away for free what I found and I’m gonna do a comparison because we did you know a 30-day trial on app advice for a subscription which is what you have to do for subscription-based apps and I want to compare the downloads between a 30-day giveaway versus a lifetime giveaway I just have a feeling that a lifetime giveaway sounds so much better and it’s 150 right my lifetime was 150 so it’s like people are like yeah well let’s do that I’m all on board
right cool Vishal says how many posts should we do in a single day that should not be considered a spam in other subreddits so for M if you have self promoting your app then you should not promote multiple um Post in a single day like if you are promoting it in subreddit a b and c then their moderator will go to your profile and see that you are posting the same
thing over and over you will be suspended or banned from that’s updated there you know Reddit is strict my friends don’t mess around with it Google hello and then Costa says Steve what do you think is a good retention rate for download to review and percentage out of 100 new users how many tend to leave a review on average about one percent custom yeah about one percent and if you communicate with them then they might um the percentage can be
increased yeah Romaine says on one one good technical I technique I learned on Reddit is to go to the relevant community and provide actual value in your post then slide in soft promotion usually moderators will let it slide yeah so like I went to the help depression this upgrade and I did it directly after some moderator if whether I can do a giveaway or not and they say that I am
if the app is free and it doesn’t harm the people in the subreddit then you can do it and most of the subat are like this that only if you are going for the paid version of the app they will not allow it at all but if you’re going for doing it for free and help the community then they will allow it I know not a lot of people have paid apps anymore but app hookup really easy to run if you got a paid app like yeah you got to pay it out and it’s going free really easy to run there

looks like a pretty simple game here yeah any anything you want to recommend from downloads perspective I think putting a video of the app game getting played that will be better if it will look better I agree and then the video gives us so that’s what I would do something else too is the video gives us it’s a YouTube video it has to be a YouTube video and then within the YouTube video you can optimize The Meta description there’s a
title the description and then the tags within YouTube have the right keywords in there because what I feel like is happening it will sort of signal to Google like hey maybe this you might also like app refer right like Apple or Google Play explore downloads try to hack that one too but yeah I think for games videos probably the one category where video probably helps out is games everything else has been pretty much hit or miss
cool uh and then look Outlaw Chase I don’t know if that’s the right keyword right what I found too so things that I’m testing on Google Play now I think you need a million downloads but promotional content pretty interesting because they are showing up in the search results and I’ll pull it up right here so think about that um where’s mine so I’m just gonna put out law chase see what happens here but think about how
you can utilize promotional content because it’s literally just an in-app event for you let’s see if they start seeing some let me see if I see any um okay not yet but give me a keyword motivation yeah okay why not right we’re on that topic okay so you got an ad up here right you got add up right here oh my gosh like lots of ads oh no this
is most likely ads this looks like this is an ad this isn’t the search result yeah and then these are ads but here this is what I’m talking about mid time and events right here yeah so leverage these limited time events to help you rank better for certain keywords now let’s just look I don’t know if Babel Has a certain in-app event that has the right keyword in there and why they’re
showing it dark mode yeah I don’t know why this is showing up but this is another great way to start hacking the ASO and then getting downloads here so that’s what I would test too it’s up now again you need I think you need a certain level of downloads before you can get to this promotional limit Time Event because not everybody has this and I think it’s a million let’s see let’s take a quick peek one million one 500 000 there you go hundred thousand so maybe 500 000 I don’t know
who knows yeah uh cool and then it looks like they’re running some ads with Google I feel like ads are important especially for games like there is so much competition yeah in plastic nobody’s searching for this type of game since it’s so casual so you’re gonna need an app play and then you can start just with Google ads too okay
so one of the things I’ve seen work really well and I’m going to create a video but give away coins in the very beginning of the game so I’ve got screenshots on this and I’ll pull it up with another app let’s see show you guys visuals because I love visuals but anything you want me to do here neatly while I pull up this app also like I have seen many apps like wild Rift and it’s a League of Legends of uh mobile version so what they did is
like they give away some skins some Champion skin and when they release the app the user directly gets the Champion screen yeah so here’s what I’m talking about this is what we did for one of our clients where we instantly will increase your revenues so here’s the app loading right then they say claim your 2000 coins bonus then they say hey you want to get 2 000 more a couple of seconds later they say never
show again now you can just put X whoops sorry flip my phone you can just put X but that’s a way to start hacking those so you make every time we run an app hookup campaign or an app advice campaign where we’re getting a lot of downloads all at once our ad Revenue instantly goes up so think about ways that you can give away certain things in the very beginning and allow people to double it by watching a video and that first time user will end up most of them will end up watching the video
okay cool let’s get into the game because right now there’s a look there’s a lot of things floating around if you want me to play something maybe just let one thing floating around when you have multiple things floating around it’s just too much so yeah see here now I have diamonds look here’s what I believe anyway if you give users these gems let’s say I can get free gems for free yeah and they gave me these like 100 gems well if I start spending money in your game my retention rate I don’t have
data to support this yet but my retention rate should go up because I’m invested in the game now so that’s why the giveaway is so important that I just shared because it gets users to be like that initial dopamine hit makes you more revenue and then likely should help you increase your retention because right now it’s like I can’t I can’t afford this like zero to 300 seems like a lot like uh I gotta play a lot to get to 300 feels that way yeah exactly and if the user can regular owner gain gems on a
regular basis of interval it will be much more entertaining for the user also and they will stick to the game for a longer period of time they will think that they can access all the entire game or the entire card for free if they keep playing what I don’t understand is why this has gems right here in this when I hit on the shopping cart it does not have gems it’s really weird let me hit on gems up here up the top nothing’s happening when
I tap this either so make this tappable to the gems part and then when I’m in the gems part which was the remove ads allow me to watch a video for like I don’t know 50 gems you know what I mean because especially on Android people would rather watch ads than give you money so right into that I think more I have noticed that um if you want more number of um purchases in the app or subscription
in the app you should put a mult in the purchase screen and direction to the participant in multiple ways like in settings you can put a on the top like and you can get premium and in the other screens also you can put some small button that will show a premium content also love it yep the more ways that they can the more links to your pricing page the better it is in a nutshell okay
I’ll play the game a little bit it’s kind of fun the controls are nice just spinning around I do not drive straight by the way okay I just let go there you go gems see that’s what I’m saying like 300 seems like so much like allow me to buy something because then I become way more invested in the game if I’m like sorry to do more
like have a really good I remember my Fun Run friend she was like there’s this Golden Monkey that nobody gets and they do these random giveaways but it’s like the one thing that everybody wants so you can have that and now save me I can watch an ad so they have an ad here but you can also okay get 50 diamonds you should have gave this away for free right like give away 50 diamonds right on the front and then allow me to double it by watching an ad you’re already doing it here show it show it earlier it
should be better Yeah by doing that thing I’m gonna penalize you penalize you something I’m not watching that ad all right that’s it on my hand anything else you want to cover on this app anyway no Steve cool all right Michael’s here Michael said hey Steve p young thanks for auditing my bug out bag app last week very informative and you suggested Reddit advertising so love well glad you’re here Michael good to see you okay same comment anyway unfortunately or fortunately for you you won that first
round it’s clean sweep we got four or five votes for you all right vinay says is there a hack to determine an ideal cost for an IAP for different countries India us for different types of apps Finance business Etc yeah actually for it enough purchase in um Asian countries you should Target for Less Price As compared to U.S but um there is a thing like if from someone
from us finds out that and in the same app has different pricing in different countries they might get offended a bit it’ll be hard to find out yeah yeah so the target pricing for Asian countries should be less as compared to Western countries as U.S or Europe European countries I like it the the thing that I would say too is winning is two things one you can just look at your competitors and see how much they’re
charging like do a really good analysis you can use sensor Tower you can use mobile you can use any of the tools out there to kind of look at the pricing for your competitors and then thirdly there’s a thing called the McDonald’s index or the Big Mac index I think it’s called The Big Mac index yeah it’s a Big Mac index and I’ll share this with you if you just Google it and it shows you how Burger prices change so the Big Mac changes based on which country you you are in and it’ll give you a formula that if it’s you know it should be 10 in

with melee the longer onboarding makes sense for a fitness app you want that oh right I’ve seen other fitness apps have really long onboarding so that’s fine because yes people might fall off but the people who do finish are more likely to pay you anyways the thing that I would test is don’t do it that way like change your paywall if you do nothing else after this have a weekly option I think test weekly right like it could be monthly three months in annual these pricing this is the biggest pricing
mistake that I see everybody make not everybody but a lot of people make is you’re pricing too fairly one plan I like three plans one plan should be the cheap plan right so for you Pascal it should be weekly try weekly we have actually seen good numbers with weekly subscriptions it takes a little bit longer you’re not going to get that initial annual whoa feel good you made 50 right off the bat but you will make fifty dollars it just might take you a month with that same user right so weekly should be a little bit lower and
that and then make six months or three months make it so close to annual that now they’re deciding between weekly or annual which are two very good LTV iltv plants lifetime value plans so that’s your pricing right now is too fair and it’s gonna lead me I’m just gonna guess that most people are signing up for this three month which is if that’s what your highest LTV is don’t do anything but if it’s not then maybe think about switching things up a little bit because it’s fitness app
like people are willing to pay for fitness apps so yeah and then you do the seven day trial on the annual and then a three-day three-day trial on the weekly and then you have this decoy plan the middle plan is always decoy that it makes them select one of the two options makes one of the options look good okay let’s go back into the app yeah so later okay I don’t mind this this is cool
