TL;DR

Vahe (Coinstats) lays out subscription strategy from the ground up: start with user use cases, measure willingness to pay, then AB test pricing with wide gaps, and attack churn through lifecycle marketing, off-boarding flows, and win-back campaigns. He also shares an ASO trick — putting your top keyword (e.g. Bitcoin) directly in the app icon lifted conversion on both stores. This source belongs to the app-masters-youtube batch.

Biggest lessons

  • Foundation = use cases, then willingness-to-pay. Build monetization on the actual jobs users install for (Calm = meditation vs sleep stories). Run WTP analysis (Van Westendorp, conjoint) but treat its output as an AB-test input, not a final price.
  • AB test pricing with wide gaps. Test $89.99 vs $199 (not $89.99 vs $69.99) — close numbers rarely reach significance and 0.5-1% lifts don’t matter for small apps. If $89.99 converts like $119.99, keep the higher price. Wait for significance (50+ trials/day) or call it after a week’s trend.
  • Churn: lifecycle marketing on behavioral cohorts. Use CRM + analytics (Iterable + Amplitude) to spot pre-churn patterns (e.g. portfolio checks drop to 1x/week) and re-engage; transfer satisfied single-use-case users to new use cases; gamification/rewards (sparks) to reignite at-risk users.
  • Off-boarding flows and win-backs. Don’t let users one-click cancel — show value lost, offer downgrade/discount/support (dark-pattern territory). Post-cancel: survey for reasons, then win back via holiday-sale and product-update emails. “Grab my deal/offer” CTAs beat “Get 20% off” in tests; email beats push for win-backs.
  • Keyword-in-icon ASO trick. Coinstats AB tested its logo with vs without “Bitcoin”/“crypto tracker” in the icon — the keyword version won on both Google Play and App Store (visual keyword recognition).
  • Pricing decoys matter. A lifetime price below the yearly price reads as scammy and backfires; put the main plan in the middle; show real prices (don’t hide behind “view all plans”).

Why it matters

  • Grounds the wiki’s monetization stack in a use-case-first methodology and concrete churn-reduction playbook (lifecycle, off-boarding, win-back).
  • The pricing-AB-test discipline and keyword-in-icon trick reinforce cross-batch claims on paywall testing and ASO conversion signals.
